Abstract

The first publication in Russian of the first letter of Hernan Cortes to Emperor Charles V with an introduction, comments and notes by the translator. Article two. In the published final part of the message of Cortes to the emperor, the course of the expedition from the island of Cozumel to Tabasco is described, where earlier Grijalva, faced with the firm refusal of the Indians to let strangers into their lands, preferred to retreat. Cortes is not like that: he endures the battle with a huge army of Indians, with the help of cavalry puts them to flight and leads to a vassal oath of allegiance to the Spanish monarch. Then the Spaniards proceeded to the Gulf of San Juan de Uloa, where Grijalva exchanged a lot of gold from the Aztecs. There are two key episodes in the further destiny of the expedition. First: “under pressure” from the soldiers and captains (but in fact by his own decision), Cortes deviates from the instructions of Velasquez and founds the city (present-day Veracruz). Second: again, on the secret initiative of Cortes, soldiers and captains appoint him captain-general during democratic elections. The final part of the letter describes the lifestyle and customs of the local Indians, including the indignant practice of human sacrifice.
