Abstract

In the Ancient Maya’s art, the image of the Bat occupies a special place among the zoomorphic ones. Images of this animal are interesting not only for its style, but also for its own symbolism and characteristics as identification of this particular character and its functions in the world vision of the Ancient Maya. These symbols are usually located on Bat's open wings. This work is dedicated to an analysis of significance of these symbols, as well as the features of the Bat iconography in general. In addition; this article was an attempt to establish the origins of the mythological image of the Bat in the sacred fauna of the Maya and its reflection in the fine arts. For an example, there will be used images of the mentioned character in monumental sculpture, ceramic musical instruments and painted ceramics.
