New European Historical Writing: Sources of Information about the Past

The article is devoted to the study of the formation of ideas about the historical source in the writings of modern thinkers Francis Bacon (1561—1626), Giambattista Vico (1668—1744), Sir Henry St. John Bolingbroke (1678—1751) and David Hume (1711—1776) The works of these authors constituted certain and significant milestones in the history of historical knowledge and in the development of history as a scientific discipline. In the second half of the 17th century. a new ideological and, above all, scientific paradigm, focused on experiment, experimental knowledge, completely changes the attitude of the humanitarian community to historical sources. Moreover, after the English Revolution of the middle of the 17th century even the movement of antiquarians was increasingly included in the context of the “scientific revolution”. It was during this period that the requirement to study history philosophically was formed the methodology for comparative analysis of the historical sources of the “new history” was developed and approved. Although, at the same time, history was not recognized as an objective, coherent and internally conditioned process and a historical source, for example, could be constructed, as it were, in two planes — historical facts and historical characters. The study of writings about the history of this period does not allow us to evaluate the history of historical knowledge as an evolutionary, consistently progressive process, but, on the contrary, shows its complexity and inconsistency.
