Abstract

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the biography of Ivan Petrov Mirchev (Koya). He came to Moscow in 1624, joining the Ottoman embassy of Ali-agha oh and Ahmet-Cheush. He spent 35 years in Russia. The archival material allows us to trace his life in his new homeland in almost detail. He was accused of ecclesiastical crimes, dragged into various conflicts in the “Greek” community, the most influential Greek ecclesiastical and secular persons in Russia stood up for him. At the same time, he himself never initiated conflicts, remaining a participant in the events that took place around him. He had various surnames in Russia and in the Ottoman Empire, fought in the Russian army in various regiments, steadily rose through the ranks, eventually entering the Moscow nobility. This information expands the understanding of the mechanisms of adaptation and methods of naturalization in Russian society of “Greek” immigrants in the 17th century.
