Novice Sanya: Underground Church Communities of the Central Chernozem Region of the Early 1930s in the Testimony of a Novice of a Secret Monastery

The publication introduces into scientific circulation the protocols of interrogations of a member of the community of Hieromonk Erasmus (Prokopenko), who occupied a central place in the investigative case of the “Brotherhood and Sisterhood of the Luminaries” in 1933. We are talking about a number of illegal lay-led church communities located in the Central Chernozem region and in other regions of the USSR, which OGPU investigators tried to present as a single counterrevolutionary paramilitary network. As in other cases of the church underground, the investigators accused the participants in the case of “luminaries” of links with counter-revolutionary clergy abroad. The publication of these protocols can serve as a starting point for further study of mass anti-church affairs of the collectivization period.
