Автор статьи рассматривает жизненный путь и творчество английской писательницы и мыслительницы Мэри Уолстонкрафт (1759—1797), которая в трактате «В защиту прав женщины» (1792) утверждала, что женщины заслуживают равных с мужчинами прав и образования. Изучены биографические факты и психологические истоки ее взглядов а также этапы их формирования, отраженные в ее сочинениях. Выделены драматические коллизии, в ходе которых взгляды Уолстонкрафт приходили в столкновение с действительностью. Эти коллизии прослежены в контексте политических событий в Англии и Франции конца XVIII в. и в контексте личной жизни Мэри. Обсуждается соотношение взглядов Уолстонкрафт, сложившихся в рамках идей Просвещения, с феминизмом рубежа XIX и XX вв. Автор концентрирует внимание на неповторимых чертах личности Мэри Уолстонкрафт, без учета которых ее взгляды и творчество не могут быть поняты в полной мере.
