On the Early Period in the Biography of Ieremia Ioffe: upon the Archival Materials

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the early period of the biography of the prominent Soviet historian of culture and art Ieremia Isaevich Ioffe. Based on the materials of several personal files of Ioffe, preserved in the funds of the Central State Archive of St. Petersburg and the Central State Archive of Historical and Political Documents of St. Petersburg, the author specifies the circumstances of the place and time of Ioffe's birth, and the education he received. The author makes the main emphasis in the article for the period after Ioffe's arrival in Petrograd in 1917. The materials introduced into scientific usage for the first time make it possible to correct ideas about his student years. The importance of his acquaintance with V. A. Desnitsky is stated. The circumstances of Ioffe's studies at the Pedagogical institute named after A. I. Herzen and work at the Communist University named after Zinoviev are described. The environment in which the formation of his theoretical views took place is analyzed.
