Авторы исследуют в статье военный потенциал Японской империи и его изменения в период Войны на Тихом океане, чтобы понять роль Тихоокеанского театра военных действий во Второй мировой войне. В этой связи авторы на основе потерь, понесенных Японией на разных фронтах, дают определение роли СССР в разгроме милитаристской Японии. Они утверждают, что вклад СССР в победу антигитлеровской коалиции в Азии заключается в большей степени в сковывании в Маньчжурии и Корее значительных сил японской армии до конца лета 1945 г., что не позволило в значительной степени японским военным одержать победу в юго-западных провинциях Китая, обеспечив себе тем самым прямое сообщение с Бирмой. Что касается разгрома ВВС Японии, которые были главной ударной силой японского милитаризма, то здесь имел место решительный вклад США, ВВС которых также к лету 1945 г. нанесли стратегическими бомбардировками значительный урон японской промышленности. Авторы в этой связи ставят под сомнение необходимость атомных бомбардировок, которые ускорили капитуляцию Японии, но не сделали ее, как доказывают авторы, неизбежной. Авторы видят главную причину поражения Японии в стратегии ее высшего командования, ставя экономику при этом на второе место. Японские адмиралы слишком преувеличили возможности палубной авиации, что стало роковым для Японии фактором в войне на Тихом океане. Авторы также утверждают, что значительную роль в разгроме Японии имели действия союзных войск в Бирме.
