Abstract

The article is dedicated to the first stage of British penetration in Iran in the early 19th century in the context of defending India against the possible French or Russian invasion. The views of the official London, East-India Company, officials in India and British representatives in the Middle East concerning the problem are considered. The analysis of the Iranian Shah’s position relating to his country’s role within the conflict going on between the European powers is carried out. The role of Napoleonic France in heating Russian wars in the East is highlighted. The reasons for Britain’s indefinite position and its consequences for the members of the regional tension are explained.
