Abstract

This article considered the possibility to use theological and exegetical works as a source to study medieval society and medieval city. The author used comments on Sacred Scriptures, written by regular canons in the first half of the 12th century. The 12th century was an unique time in the history of medieval civilization of Western Europe due to fundamental transformations in culture, politics, economics and  society, it was a time of making and spreading of medieval cities as a new form of social life. Regular canons, who became involved in active spiritual care of urban communities, tried to examine their own experience of the life in the city through the interpreting the Holy Scriptures. The article studied, what was a square as element of urban landscape in the exegesis of regular canons and what kind of social practices were performed there.
