Intersection and Mutual influence of Regional and National History: Studies in Methodology

In this article the methodological discussions that took place in the historiography of the 20^th century in connection with the creation of regional and national historical narratives are analyzed. In particular, the article shows how the concepts on regions were shaped, how their scientific conceptualization was substantiated. The main focus is on how ideas about Central Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia have evolved. The author of the article analyzes how the “regionalist challenges” are reflected in modern historical science, how the political elaboration of the past correlates with modern historiographic trends. The article concludes that one can hardly agree with the assumption that the regional framework of historical narrative by default creates problems for the national framework. According to the author, regional history is one of the most important and promising tools for historical projects that try to overcome the limitations of nationally oriented narrative. Nevertheless, methodological nationalism still prevails, and the crucial question of more complex and flexible categories in the historical conceptualization of space beyond nation-states is still in very early and preliminary stages of analysis.
