Abstract

The article is devoted to the heraldic support of the armed forces of Portugal in the second half of the twentieth century. Of course, heraldic symbols to one degree or another presented in the Portuguese army earlier, but it is in the described period they receive their completeness, without having lost their relevance so far. The heraldic traditions of Portugal go back to the Roman era. Flourishing in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, they received a worthy development in the Contemporary History. Thanks to the “historical echo” we can see the most diverse heraldic figures, badges and mottos on coats of arms, emblems and banners. Studying the heraldic support of the Portuguese armed forces, we find a harmonious, strictly verified system that takes into account all the traditions of the arrangement of figures, fields, parts, colors and other rules. A key element of military heraldry is knowledge of the history of those or other equal military formations to which it is assigned. By this knowledge, the glorious historical traditions of the Portuguese armed forces are emphasized.
