Personal Interest or Common Good? Power Structures of England, Hainaut and Brabant in Struggle for the Possessions of Jacoba of Bavaria

The inheritance of Hainaut, Holland and Zeeland by Jacoba of Bavaria in 1417 led to the conflict over these counties with her uncle John of Bavaria. Burgundian relatives of Jacoba and John of Bavaria (dukes John the Fearless and Philip the Bold) were soon involved into the conflict as well as Jacoba’s husband duke John IV of Brabant and the states of the duchy. Jacoba’s fled to England and her marriage in 1422 to the duke Humphrey of Gloucester (the uncle of the young king Henry VI) without the cancellation of her marriage to John of Brabant by the Pope later led to the involvement of English political institutions (Privy Council, Parliament) into the struggle for Jacoba’s possessions. Representative institutions often could influence the course of events because they voted aids and other subsidies. But the representatives of Brabant and Hainaut as well as English noblemen were not always ready to provide the funds and military forces to struggle for the personal interests of the rulers separating them from the defense of the ‘common good’, for example, the defense of the borders.
