“Our Great and Good Ally”: the Image of France in the American Revolution

Abstract

The imagology of the Franco-American Alliance of 1778 presents an interesting problem of the study of the friendly Other. This article deals with the perception of France during the War of independence of the United States. The research source base consists of the protocols of the Continental Congress, debates of the ratification conventions of 1787—1788, private letters and diaries, novels and historical works. Content analysis is used to identify stereotypes related to France. Sustainable imagological motives and tactical elements of the image are disclosed. The presence of the France image in the American everyday life is analyzed.
