Beer Culture in the USSR in the 1950—1970s (on the Example of Leningrad and the Leningrad Region)

Based on previously unpublished sources and oral interviews, the article examines the features of the formation of beer culture in the late Soviet society. During the reign of N. S. Khrushchev and L. I. Brezhnev, beer culture became an important part of the daily life of Soviet citizens. It was a set of specific practices for the realization and consumption of beer, which were an important component of leisure in late Soviet society. The development of these practices was largely a consequence of state policy, when the expansion of the range and sales of beer, along with other low-alcohol drinks, was supposed to reduce the consumption of vodka, which, according to the authorities, improved the situation in the improved the situation among workers at the enterprise and the social atmospheres in general.
