Abstract

The article deals with the figure of Pseudo-Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. He appeared in the Holy Roman Empire in 1284 and gained some support for more than a year. His name was Tile Kolup. After his bright but short “political carreer” the impostor was burned by the legitimate king Rudolf of Habsburg on 7 July 1285. The author analyses, what social groups gave him their favor and what reasons and expectations did each of them have to support the impostor. The author shows, that burgers of the imperial cities, Jewish community, some of the noblemen gave Pseudo-Frederick their support because they suffered under the reign of Rudolf of Habsburg. Supporting the impostor various social groups showed the king that they had not been satisfied of his methods of ruling the country. So the figure of Pseudo-Frederick was neither more nor less than a sign, an unspoken word in the dialogue between the king and his people. Therefore, rules and moves in this political communication was clear for the both sides, ruler and various social groups of the late 13th century Holy Roman Empire.
