The Authority and the Society in Dubrovnik in the 15th — 17th Centuries

The commune of Dubrovnik was mentioned in the documents of the XV century as “the Republic”. This political unite, being situated between “the Lion” (Republic of Venice) and “the Dragon” (Ottoman Empire), kept its freedom during 450 years and was being included in Austrian Empire only after the Napoleonic wars. In historiography the image of Republic of Dubrovnik was confirmed, in which the ideal of the civic life was reflected in the Latin inscription Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro, that was stamped in the castle of Lovrienats. In this article the dynamic of the concept “freedom” in the perception the citizens of the Republic is being concerned and the activities of the nobility upon the mobilization of the society for the keeping of the stability and protection of freedom against the claims of the nearby states is being analyzed.
