Abstract

The article deals with basic concepts about the role of philosophers in the organization and management of people's living together. And although philosophizing and ruling are two very different forms of understanding the way of the human being’s life, nevertheless, throughout history philosophers, in their quest for perfection, pay close attention to the problems of polity, offered to certain governance principles and best combination of wisdom and power. The author analyzes the evolution of ideas about the possibility of cooperation between philosopher and ruler, beginning from Plato's grounded ideal of combining philosophizing and ruling to the comprehensively developed concept of Erasmus of Rotterdam about the role of the philosopher as a mentor to the powers that be. The central idea of the article is justified, namely: service to society through the service of a ruler means for a true philosopher adherence to his ideals, first of all ensuring in the dormitory people harmony of common and private interests, balancing principles of law-abiding behavior of citizens and opportunities for unimpeded manifestation of their own goodwill.
