On Possible Interpolation of Certain Mathematical Examples in Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics

Abstract

In the following article I cautiously propose a hypothesis aimed towards resolving several problems of the text of Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics. The hypothesis is that some of the examples that are used in Posterior Analytics to illustrate its doctrine of the first principles of demonstrative knowledge (most importantly – the example of unit), are in fact interpolations of a later editor of the text. My argument is the following one. We know, that in case of Aristotle’ texts some kind of editorial work by one or several later editors is most probable. In case of Posterior Analytics it is more probable, than in case of other texts – if only for the fact of its exceptional convolution and proneness to contradict itself. Examples are exactly where we are to anticipate editorial work to be found. The examples, with which the doctrine of the first principles are illustrated contradict each other more often than not. In case of the most frequent of those example – the example of the unit – there is at least one place (93b24-25) of which we can be fairly sure that it was interpolated (as it both does not illustrate the thesis it is supposed to illustrate and breaks the continuity of the text). This gives us additional grounds to suspect other instances of the same example. We can also suggest from where the example of the unit was drawn by a hypothetical editor and why was it used by him so stubbornly. The proposed suggestions would help to explain several of the major contradictions extant in the text of Posterior Analytics as we have it.

1 В настоящей работе я хотел бы предложить гипотезу, которая должна облегчить чтение одного из самых запутанных произведений Аристотеля – «Второй аналитики», позволить взглянуть на него как на трактат, содержащий если не связную доктрину, то по крайней мере ее зародыш. Я должен сразу заметить, что это будет в целом плохая гипотеза – однако достойной рассмотрения ее делает то, что она хоть как-то пытается объяснить имеющиеся в тексте противоречия, тогда как прочие подходы к тексту «Аналитики» зачастую эти противоречия просто игнорируют. Я не могу сказать, что я полностью убежден в правильности этой гипотезы: предполагаемый ею способ обращения с текстом Аристотеля смущает и меня самого. Однако когда остальные подходы ко «Второй аналитике» уже испробованы и принесли мало пользы, настает время и для плохих гипотез.
2 Суть предлагаемой гипотезы заключается в следующем: некоторые примеры, которыми во «Второй аналитике» иллюстрируется концепция начал доказательного знания, являются интерполяциями позднего по сравнению с Аристотелем редактора текста – возможно, они добавлены в ходе обработки текста во время издания Андроника или еще раньше, кем-то из непосредственных преемников Аристотеля. Прежде всего предположение касается устойчиво воспроизводящихся в тексте примеров единицы и точки, но возможно также рассмотреть вопрос о включении редактором в текст некоторых других математических иллюстраций.
3 Прежде чем изложить саму эту гипотезу во всех должных подробностях, я должен ясно указать, что я вполне ясно понимаю характер и глубину ее недостатков. Прежде всего, она представляет собой попытку атетезы частей текста не на основании свидетельств имеющихся у нас рукописей, а на основании чисто теоретических соображений. Любые попытки изменить имеющийся текст на философских, а не филологических основаниях – это плохо. Попытка изменить текст, потому что он не поддается интерпретации, в каком-то смысле всегда отдает жульничеством. Немедленно становится возможен справедливый упрек в том, что производящей подобные манипуляции с текстом просто недостаточно умен или грамотен, чтобы понять его так, как он перед ним есть.
4 Я все это вполне понимаю. Поэтому хотя ниже я буду пытаться со всей серьезностью отстоять точку зрения, что текст должен быть изменен, я должен заранее заметить: я ни в коем случае не готов решительно настаивать на безоговорочной верности произведенного в данной статье анализа; скорее я хотел бы предложить определенные соображения на суд коллег – с тем, чтобы их полезность для интерпретации текста была оценена кем-то за пределами моего собственного пристрастного ума.
5 Итак, что именно тексте «Второй аналитики» я предлагаю поставить под сомнение? В целом я предлагаю отнестись с подозрением к большинству примеров, которыми проиллюстрирована доктрина начал доказательного знания в (An. Post. I.1 71a11–17; I.2 72a14–24; I.10 76a31–b22 и II.9); в настоящей статье я, однако, сосредоточусь прежде всего на том, чтобы попытаться доказать тезис о том, что пример единицы, которым иллюстрируется учение о таком виде начал доказательного знания, как гипотезы в (An. Post. I.2 72a21–24; I.10 76a34–36; 76b4–5; II.9 93b24–25), а также, возможно, в (I.1 71a15–17) не является примером самого Аристотеля, но был неудачно помещен в текст более поздним редактором, чтобы пояснить мысль Аристотеля. Ниже я постараюсь привести все соображения в пользу этого тезиса, – от самых общих и малообязывающих и до самых, на мой взгляд, конкретных и веских.
