Cairo in 2023: Ancient Monuments, Books, Problems of the Contemporary Education and Political Anxieties

Abstract

One of the favorite Arab cities for this author is the great and inexhaustible city of Cairo. Visiting it in November 2023 the Author of this paper managed to glance at the antiquities and the contemporary life of the capital of the Nile Country through the eyes of the professional Egyptian guide Mr. Ashraf, a descendant of the Mamluk warriors (Egyptian rulers of the 13th–16th centuries) and the Bedouins, who reside at the foots of the Great Pyramids since the 10-the century. Mr. Ashraf was relating the history of his family, showed the author the Pyramids and the Sphynx, a part of the treasures of the Egyptian Museum, the Coptic Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Sarga) and the famous market of Khan al-Khalili. The Russian Arabist was listening and making mental notes of what was said. Besides that, he visited some book stalls, where he purchased a rear book, and observed what was happening at the evening streets of Cairo. Meanwhile the delegation, a part of which was the Author, met with the Russian Ambassador, participated in the opening ceremony of “The Russian Education in Egypt” exhibition, carried out the academic and practical conference “Human Being and the Values of the Contemporary World”, where Dr. Mikulsky had the honor of carrying out Arabic-Russian simultaneous interpretation. Thus, in this paper modern Cairo meets its Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the traditional Egyptian lifestyle, and the most acute contemporaneity.

1 Испокон веков для арабиста существуют две главнейшие радости — приобрести редкую арабскую книгу и побывать в одном из славных городов Арабского мира. 12–15 ноября прошедшего 2023 г. эта радость снова выпала на долю автора. Встреча с великим Каиром, где мне доводилось бывать неоднократно, состоялась, потому что меня пригласили принять участие в конференции «Человек и ценности современного мира», проводимой Институтом наследия и современного общества РГГУ и Египетско-российским университетом при поддержке Совета при Президенте Российской Федерации по правам человека и развитию гражданского общества, Россотрудничества и Союза женщин России. Я немедленно согласился, потому что очень люблю и Каир, и Египет, и египтян (Илл. 1).

5 Российскую делегацию возглавлял Валерий Александрович Фадеев, советник Президента Российской Федерации, Председатель Совета при Президенте Российской Федерации по развитию гражданского общества и правам человека, научный руководитель Института наследия и современного общества РГГУ. В делегацию входили заместитель начальника департамента Секретариата Руководителя Администрации Президента Российской Федерации Сергей Александрович Куринов, и. о. заведующего кафедрой философии и методологии науки философского факультета МГУ имени М. В. Ломоносова, доцент Тарас Александрович Вархотов, амбассадор Союза женщин России, и. о. директора Института наследия и современного общества РГГУ Альбина Евгеньевна Дударева и заместитель директора Института наследия и современного общества РГГУ Владислава Валерьевна Ковалевская. Востоковедение было представлено руководителем Восточного культурного центра Института востоковедения РАН, руководителем укрупненной группы специальностей «Востоковедение и африканистика» РГГУ Ланой Меджидовной Раванди-Фадаи, доцентом, кандидатом исторических наук, заместителем заведующего кафедры арабской филологии ИСАА МГУ Андреем Валерьевичем Германовичем и автором этих строк.
6 Устроители конференции распорядились так, чтобы во время нашей краткой поездки работа сочеталась с посещением историко-культурных памятников Каира, а поскольку этот древний город изобилует исторически значимыми архитектурными сооружениями и памятными местами, для нас были выбраны лишь особо важные.
7 Господин Ибрахим Ашраф в роли Шахразады
8 Знакомились мы с достопримечательностями египетской столицы благодаря подробным и занимательным (как у Шахразады) рассказам профессионального гида Ибрахима Ашрафа. Независимо от соответствия исторической истине эти рассказы интересны сами по себе и как образец повествований египетских гидов, и как пример того, как египтяне воспринимают прошлое.
