AbstractM. M. Zavadovskii was one the leading Soviet biologists of the 1920s – 1940s, who made a significant contribution to science both as a researcher and as an administrator. His scientific career, however, even if largely successful, was not smooth due to, first and foremost, the fact that it fell on hard times in the turbulent and sometimes tragic years of Soviet history, and Zavadovskii’s active involvement in political discussions that were shaking Soviet science during that period. A vivid symbol of difficulties encountered by Zavadovskii in his scientific career is the history of awarding the Stalin Prize to him for the works on induced superfecundity in livestock: first nominated for this prize in 1940 right after it was instituted, he was only awarded it in 1946, having encountered strong opposition. This chapter in Zavadovskii’s biography is a completely blank space and this article attempts to at least partly fill it based on the studies of the relevant documents deposited in the Russian State Archive of Economics.
