Abstract

Robert Erskine, one of the prominent representatives of European science who made a significant impact on the development of science in Russia, was a physician from an old aristocratic Scottish family. His professional career began as apprentice to Hugh Paterson, a well-known Edinburgh surgeon apothecary. The paper analyzes the contract between Erskine and Paterson, discovered in the Manuscript Collections of the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. This document, published in Russian for the first time, sheds new light on the activities of Robert Erskine, who was appointed as Archiator, i. e. head of all medical institutions in Russia, by Peter I, not only as a physician but also as a representative of European alchemy, iatrophysics, and iatrochemistry.
