Abstract

The quality of grain crop seeding, first and foremost, dependson the characteristics of seed-feeding devices. These devices must ensure stablefeeding of the seeds regardless of the machine’s movement speed, the fieldgradient, and the vehicle’s vibration due to surface topology. In addition, theyshould be universal: ensure drilling of seeds with a broad range of physicaland mechanical properties and be easy to set up and operate. They mustnot damage the seeds and should prevent their spontaneous spilling and,at the same time, be easy to clean when necessary.

This paper reviews the history of development of the design of seed-feedingdevices on grain drills, analyzes the contribution of a number of engineersand scientists (J. Locatelli, A. von Thaer, J. Cooke, etc.) to this field, offersa classification of seed-feeding devices, and analyzes the internationalexperience of agricultural mechanization. This information can be of interestnot only for the historians but also for contemporary engineers, as seed-feeding device is one of the fastest-evolving components of grain drills thatare still being enhanced, and analysis of the accumulated experience in thisarea can be valuable for optimizing the design of this device so as to make it maximally efficient.
