Abstract

This paper deals with the history of a longstanding rivalry between the two Moscow natural history societies, the Moscow Society of Naturalists (MOIP) and the Society of Friends of Natural Science, Anthropology and Ethnography (OLEAE), and with the outcome of this competition. Founded in 1805, by the middle of the 19 th century MOIP was in some decline, having, in fact, limited its activities to holding meetings and publishing works, and met the organization of OLEAE in 1863 with caution, being apprehensive of competition. These apprehensions proved to be quite correct: the new society burst into bustling activity in various scientific fields and, effectively, dominated the Moscow scientific scene throughout the second half of the 19 th and early 20 th century. However, in the Soviet era, the wide range of OLEAE’s research interests and its loose organizational structure played against it and eventually OLEAE was swallowed up by MOIP in the course of scientific societies reorganization in the USSR in 1930.
