Abstract

This paper for the first time reviews the history of formation of the team of staff members and volunteers of the Pechora Natural History Station of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Ust-Tsilma, enlisted by its founder, A. V. Zhuravskii, to participate in the expeditionary activities and laboratory processing of collected materials. The Station created in 1911

mostly specialized in collecting flora and fauna specimens and the objects of ethnographic value in the north-west of European Russia. As a founder of the Station, Zhuravskii realized that, in order to meet its goals and purposes, the Station needed a competent scientific staff team, and actively enlisted the services of geologists, botanists, engineers, and ethnographers. He also actively enlisted the help of the locals and political exiles during the expeditionary work. The paper describes Zhuravskii’s working relationships with the Station’s staff members, their social status and contribution to the studies of the Pechora North. Due to Zhuravskii’s self-sacrificing work and enthusiasm, the range of persons involved in the academic station’s activities broadened significantly, in particular, to include the representatives of indigenous peoples. It is emphasized that Zhuravskii knew how to choose and bring together determined, creative, and educated people who played an important role in the history of Russia and studies of the north-east of European Russia.
