Abstract

The trial of the generals who won the Arginusae sea battle of 406 B.C. was one of the most scandalous episodes of the history of Classical Athens. The second part of the article begins with a scrutiny of the legal aspect of the trial, which, in the author’s opinion, belonged to the εἰσαγγελίαἀσεβείας type. Then goes on the analysis of prosopograhical data on the persons connected with the trial and its results. A special accentuation is made on the figures of Theramenes and Thrasybulus, who, on the one hand, were Alcibiades’ supporters, and, on the other hand, had personal reasons for the attack on their commanders. As a result, the general conclusion is made that much in the process’ run is impossible to understand without due regard for the great role played in that-time Athens by (even absent) Alcibiades, whose return to the military guidance was wished by many citizens.
