Abstract

The early 1930s was the time when S.A. Zhebelev gradually joined the circle of the canonical authorities in Soviet classical studies. His discovery of the “revolution of slaves” contributed to the consolidation of the status of his works in the Soviet science. The middle and the second half of the 1930s became a time of consolidation of this status at the institutional level. The article explores the strengthening of the position of S.А. Zhebelev in the institutional structure of the Soviet historical science, including the intensification of his contacts with Moscow colleagues, his participation in the preparation of the multi-volume project of The World History, and the awarding of the title of an Honored Science Worker of the RSFSR. An analysis of his private correspondence allows us to draw certain conclusions regarding the perception of the situation in Soviet science by the historian himself.
