1 Изучение римской провинции Британия сейчас переживает настоящий расцвет: появление новых концепций и пересмотр старых идей идут рука об руку с развитием и совершенствованием исследовательских техник и методологий. Хорошей иллюстрацией этих процессов может служить недавно опубликованный сборник статей, объединенный общим объектом изучения — Валом Антонина1. Книга представляет собой festschrift в честь профессора Лоуренса Кеппи, известного исследователя Римской Империи и севера Британии в римскую эпоху, бывшего до недавнего времени хранителем музея Хантериан при университете Глазго. Кеппи принадлежит ряд важных публикаций, касающихся римских памятников Шотландии, проблем римской эпиграфики, культуры и военного дела2. В сборнике приняли участие ведущие исследователи римской Британии и Империи, а также коллеги Кеппи по музею — Дэвид Бриз, Уильям Хэнсон, Ник Ходжсон, Линдси Алласон-Джонс, Эрик Граафсталь, Александр Мейер и другие. Всего сборник включает 32 статьи и отличается большим тематическим разнообразием: здесь нашлось место как анализу конкретно-исторического материала, так и историографическим работам. 1. Вал Антонина – линия римских военных укреплений, протянувшаяся на 62 км (42 римские мили) от Олд-Килпатрика до Кэрридена, что находится примерно на широте современных Эдинбурга и Глазго. За дату его возведения принято считать 142 (RIB 2191) год, когда по приказу Антонина Пия под руководством губернатора римской Британии Лоллия Убрика римляне создают новые укрепления. Вопрос назначения, бытования и контекста существования вала остается дискуссионным.

2 С точки зрения содержания книгу можно разделить на две крупных части. Первая включает в себя 10 статей, в центре которых находятся историография и научная популяризация истории Антонинова вала. Эта часть, на наш взгляд, несколько менее ценна, по сравнению со второй. В неё входят 22 статьи, наглядно иллюстрирующих прогресс современных исследований северных границ провинции и потому особенно важных для реконструкции и переосмысления истории не только римской Британии, но также всей империи.
3 К первой группе можно отнести публикации друзей и коллег Кеппи по музею: в частности, работу о музейных экспонатах от Фрейзера Хантера3, текст Иена Брауна о музее сэра Джона Клерка4, рассуждения о важности простых прогулок для поиска новых объектов от Джеймса Уолкера, статью Джеффа Бейли и Джеймса Мирнса об изучении стены Антонина собирателем древностей и исследователем Джоном Андерсоном5. Особого упоминания заслуживают презентации научно-популярных проектов — видеореконструкции римской жизни на основе монумента Верекунды6, мультимедийного мобильного приложения, позволяющего путешествовать «по стене», и опыта воссоздания исторического облика описание роли изображений при попытках реконструкции Вала Антонина с опорой на различные изображения. Кроме того, благодаря привлечению данных геолокации, удалось создать мобильное приложение. В нем с помощью встроенных и привязанных к геолокационным точкам информационным советам и статьям о том, что там находилось прежде, у интересующегося человека появляется возможность совершить путешествие почти по Римской Британии7. Еще одним текстом со схожим посылом является статья Патриции Уик, представляющая собой описание успехов и перспектив проекта, связанного с местами мирового наследия (World Heritage Site). В эту же группу можно включить статью-рассказ Иена Брауна о том, как Вальтер Скотт использовал в одном из эпизодов в своих книгах реальную историю, связанную с ошибкой антиковеда (уже упомянутого сэра Джона Клерка), который принял овчарню за остатки римского лагеря. 3.
