Spatial Potential of Russia – Another Reason Not to Change Anything?

The article critically analyzes the project of development of Russia that includes using its geographical position between the two fast-developing economies of European Union and China. Revealing its weak spots, the paper states that the emphasis on similar projects as well as the continuous search for new development possibilities rather demonstrate the absence of development and another failure of modernization. Working out projects of social development demands for a set of conditions. Firstly, development has to be seen as a deep qualitative transformation, not as superficial changes and technological innovations. Secondly, we have to rely on the actual state of society, basing on competent and unbiased sociological studies. Finally, geography has to be theoretically integrated with sociology, given that human activity is responsible for development, not territory. All this is absent in the project under analysis. The author states that the actual state of the modern Russian society prevents it from fulfilling this project.
