Abstract

The article analyzes the problem of adequate reading and reproduction of draft manuscripts by F. M. Dostoevsky, related to the question of the use of lowercase and uppercase letters in the names of characters in the novel “The Possessed”, created in 1870-1872. This question is of paramount importance for the formation of the meaning of the records: the same word written with a lowercase or uppercase letter changes the meaning of the text, acquiring the properties of a proper name or a household name (beauty / Beauty, teacher / Teacher, rider / Rider, etc.). A hypothesis is put forward about the instrumental using by Dostoevsky names and appellatives in the work on the novel “The Possessed”, in the early stage of creating the form he needed a special kind of naming of persons who combine the socio-cultural characteristics of the person receiving the function of naming. The article contains the analysis of the writer's use of pairs of onim / appellative in the formation of the set of characters in the novel “The Possessed”.
