Abstract

Turgenev’s later works — especially his so-called ‘mysterious’ novellas — are specifically concerned with the idea of fear. Turgenev’s mastery of this particular subject has greatly impressed his younger contemporary Maupassant. The works of both writers reveal similarities in treating the fear theme. Meanwhile, in Chekhov’s short story “Terror” one character speaks of his existential fear, which is different from the situational fears depicted in previous literature. Chekhov’s story prompts comparison to and evokes typological parallels with the ideas of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard.

Keywordsthe fear theme, Turgenev’s mysterious novellas, fabulas of fear in Maupassant’s short stories, existential awe, angst, Chekhov
