Abstract

The article discusses the little-known historical aspect of Russian-Serbian relations, connected with the plans of the Russian Empire for penetration of Serbia’s markets in the late 19th and early 20th century. This factor became one of the important counterweights to Austrian politics in the struggle for influence not only in Serbia, but also in the Balkan region. The realities of the industrial society that emerged in the world required the Petersburg cabinet to significantly adjust its policy, which was based earlier on the traditional, but by the beginning of the XX century turned into archaic factors of «unanimity» and «homogeneity». After the Berlin Congress of 1878, the Serbian Prince Milan linked his country’s future to Austrian interests, and Russian influence decreased significantly. In the search for a solution to regain lost influence in the country, the Petersburg Cabinet paid increasing attention to the development of economic relations, which could give a new impetus to the development of Russian-Serbian political relations. The abdication of the Serbian King Milan in 1889, the accession to power of the Russophile Radical Cabinet, became favorable factors for Petersburg to regain its position in the country.  In this sense, a mutually advantageous trade agreement concluded in 1893, which ran counter to the interests of Vienna, had far-reaching consequences, becoming the basis for the development of Russian-Serbian multidimensional contacts after the collapse of the Obrenović dynasty in 1903.
