Abstract

The article analyzes the modern Italian historical and political discourse on the events of the 1940s on the Istrian peninsula. The problem of the so-called «Italian exodus» after the end of the Second World War is one of the most sensitive in the relations between modern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. This article, relying on extensive empirical material, shows that the theme of the exodus has been steadily politicizing at the domestic and foreign policy level in Italy since the second half of the 2000s. Fundamental prerequisites for putting the issue on the agenda were created during the Cold War, when numerous humanitarian organizations focused on the Eastern Adriatic, appeared. Therefore, we can assume that that Italian policy towards the neighboring eastern states will become increasingly structured and active.
