Abstract

One of the most brilliant representatives of the Slovenian patriotic clergy who advocated the preservation of the Slovenian language as the basis of national identification of this small Slavic nation was Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, ecclesiastical and pedagogical writer, and church administrator. His cultural and educational activities (foundation of the Society of St. Mohor and so on) and school curricula, worked out within the framework of Maria Theresa’s and Joseph II’ s reforms, played a crucial role in the development of education in the mother-tongue among the Slovenians, contributed to the development of literature for children.
