He came from a variety of places, or Where and when Daniel Granin was born

A decree of the president of the Russian Federation, proclaimed the year 2019 the year of the writer Daniil Granin. The authors of the article bring to attention a rather peculiar fact: his place of birth still remains unknown. The date of birth of D. A. Hermann (Granin) has not been established either. The purpose of the study is to analyze various versions associated with the identification of the writer’s birthplace. The article shows how in different years Granin referred to various settlements as his homeland: Volyn, Volsk, the area of Kingisepp (Yamburg). As a result of the study, the authors conclude that granin’s most likely place of birth of is the city of Vilna (Vilnius), and as for the date of birth, mid-december 1917 seems most plausible.
