Abstract

The historical process in the North-West Russia is characterized by complexity and versatility. Over the centuries, this region has witnessed a variety of historical events, changes in political and administrative boundaries, the founding of cities, the establishment of new communication routes, and the decline of old ones, alongside the growth of industry and trade. These changes were interconnected and mutually influential, highlighting the need for a comprehensive examination of all these phenomena. The spatial positioning of various geographical objects and phenomena is particularly significant, as it helps us understand why their interactions occurred in the ways they did. To grasp these spatial relationships, however, complex maps are necessary, ones that simultaneously depict different types of objects and phenomena.

This article addresses the portrayal of North-West Russia's historical development on complex historical and geographical maps spanning from the 5th-6th centuries AD to the early 21st century. It includes a review of the sources used in creating the maps. The article also analyzes the challenges faced in mapping various types of objects and outlines solutions to these problems. Additionally, it presents a periodization of the historical process in the region, developed during the creation of the maps.

1 Введение. Северо-Запад России, как его обычно понимают географы, включает территорию С.-Петербурга, Ленинградской, Псковской и Новгородской областей, а также, как правило, Калининградской области, занимающей полуэксклавное положение и отделённой от основной территории России территориями других государств [10]. В контексте исторической географии из этого определения, очевидно, следует исключить Калининградскую область, окончательно вошедшую в состав России лишь в середине XX в. В то же время западная часть Вологодской области, ныне относящаяся к Российскому Северу, исторически была тесно связана с Северо-Западом как путями сообщения (в частности, Мариинской и Тихвинской водными системами), так и административной принадлежностью — в различные исторические эпохи она входила в состав различных административно-территориальных единиц с центрами в Новгороде и С.-Петербурге — Ленинграде.
2 Исторической географии Северо-Запада посвящено немало работ. В них рассматриваются такие вопросы, как история и современное состояние исторических водно-волоковых путей [5; 15; 27], водных путей с каналами [16; 25; 26] и древних сухопутных дорог [20; 28], а также эволюция административно-территориального деления как Северо-Запада в целом [8; 9], так и отдельных его регионов [2; 7]. В ряде этих работ присутствуют многочисленные карты, однако они, как правило, показывают лишь какие-то определённые объекты (например, системы исторических путей сообщения или изменения границ административно-территориальных образований) без учёта их взаимосвязей с географическими объектами иных типов.
3 Авторами данной статьи составлены комплексные историко-географические карты Северо-Запада России, показывающие одновременно границы (как внешние, так и внутренние), систему городов и соединяющие их пути сообщения (по возможности с указанием перевозимых по ним основных грузов), а также происходившие на территории региона основные исторические события (например, боевые действия). Эти карты были составлены в ходе работ над Атласом-справочником С.-Петербурга, который в настоящее время готовится к изданию в РГПУ им. А. И. Герцена.
4 Данный атлас является комплексным изданием, включающим большое количество карт, посвящённых процессам, объектам и явлениям, происходившим или имеющим место на территории города, а также связанным с ним.
5 Существенным компонентом любого комплексного атласа является набор исторических карт, показывающих развитие изучаемой территории. Однако история С.-Петербурга неотделима от истории окружающего его региона, поэтому в атлас будут включены также карты, показывающие историческое развитие Северо-Запада России.
6 Рассмотрим далее историю Северо-Запада, начиная с эпохи формирования современных геопространственных структур, т. е. V–VI вв. н. э., и до наступления современной эпохи [14].
