Inside an old photos: Jericho finds in the photographs of the 1880s–1890s

The study analyzes the origin, the author (monk Timon), and the shooting date (probably, 1888–1892) of two well-known photographs depicting objects of metal, ceramics, and stone found in Jericho at the Joasaph (?) site (now the Russian Museum and Park Complex) in the 1880s. This identification made it possible to compare the items in the photographs with the collection obtained from the same site by the Russian-Palestinian expedition of the Institute of Archaeology RAS in the 2010s. Thus, the collection, especially in terms of bronze items of the 5th–7th centuries, was replenished significantly. It was also possible to identify most of the pottery items, including them in the typological groups developed by modern research for the technological and morphological characterization of pottery. This, in turn, lead to the conclusion that the collection was obtained exactly from the Joasaph site, where excavations revealed an area of pottery production. It includes kilns that operated successively and production facilities of other types (sedimentation tanks, water tanks, etc.).

1	История раскопок на "русских участках" в Иерихоне неоднократно излагалась в последнее время, в том числе в связи с возобновлением там археологических работ в 2010-х гг. (Беляев, 2016. С. 47-82 и др.). В потоке этих публикаций постоянно мелькают две фотографии из "Палестинской коллекции" ГМИР (инвентарные номера П-1684 и П-1685; см.: сайт «Коллекция фотографий ИППО в ГМИР»; Федотов, 2015. С. 177-200). Украшают они в настоящее время, в сильно увеличенном виде, и экспозицию Музейно-паркового комплекса РФ в Иерихоне. Рис. 1 и 2.
2	К этим фотографиям не дают сколько-нибудь сложного комментария. Однако они его давно заслужили, хотя бы потому, что изображенные предметы обнаруживают корреляцию с находками Российско-Палестинской экспедиции ИА РАН 2010-х гг. на Иоасафовском участке (МПК РФ). Они настолько близки, что образуют единую «виртуальную коллекцию». Мы говорим не только о чрезвычайно многочисленных вообще керамических светильниках и мелких сосудах, их сходство легко объяснимо через частоту встречаемости. Но и на фото с металлическими изделиями представлены как будто специально подобранными друг к другу. Найденной нами бронзовой лампе отвечают высокие подставки (ее заостренные штыри прекрасно подойдут к ячейке в ее подставке. Образуют "пару" и кадильницы на бронзовых цепях (см.: Беляев, 2016. Рис. 112, табл. на с. 147-148). Вполне вероятно, что эти предметы принадлежали в свое время единому комплексу церковных сосудов VI-VII вв., часть которого была найдена при раскопках о. Иоасафа, а остатки собраны экспедицией ИА РАН в 2010 г. (характеристике металлических предметов будет посвящена отдельная статья). Интересно, что аналогичны и небольшие вытянутые капители с арабизированным орнаментом и выдолбленным плинтом: фрагмент изображен на снимке (рис. 2 - 20), похожий найден при работах 2019 г. на МПК (рис. 3 а), сохранный же прототип обеих обнаружен в коллекции о. Антонина (рис. 3 б).

4	Когда и кем сделаны эти находки? Отцом Иоасафом при работах по закладке (1882 - начало 1884 г.) храма? Или Яковым Смирновым при раскопках экспедиции Н.П. Кондакова в 1891 г.? Они могли быть собраны на участке местными жителями, принесены из Русской Духовной миссии, да и просто куплены о. Антонином (Капустиным) или его преемниками. До конца обстоятельства фотосъёмки неизвестны, но мы постараемся прояснить ситуацию.
5	Оба снимка упомянуты в первом каталоге фотографий ИППО (см.: Юшманов, 1894) под названием «Иерихон. Сад Палестинского общества. Вещи, найденные при раскопках» (№№630-631 на странице 25). Автор снимков обозначен в каталоге как «Т» (в указателе фотографических собраний в конце каталога даётся расшифровка его имени – «Тимон, монах Русской духовной миссии в Иерусалиме в 1884-1893 гг.»). Есть основания усомниться в точности сведений, указанных составителем каталога В.Д. Юшмановым, поскольку во втором каталоге фотографий ИППО (см.: Юшманов, 1900) под номером 3462 значится снимок Тимона под названием «Иерихон. Приют о. Антонина с севера». Однако, оформлен отпечаток в совершенно нетипичном для этого автора стиле: фотография наклеена на относительно небольшое зеленоватое паспарту, в верхней части изящным почерком (не рукой Тимона) сделана надпись «Иерихонский приют 29.IX.91». Аналогичным образом оформлена и фотография под номером 3825 (Церковь Вознесения на Елеонской горе), на которой, однако, имеется чёткая подпись фотоателье «Бонфис» на французском языке (вероятно, фотограф этой студии сделал и снимок Иерихонского приюта).
