Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of subjective perceptions of external and internal reasons for everyday leaving home and to the interrelations of these representations with home attachment, functionality and relevance of the home environment. The symbolic and everyday meaning of crossing the border “in home – out of home” is considered. The main internal and external reasons for everyday leaving home in modern youth have been identified. The study conducted with 245 respondents has shown the relationship between internal and external reasons for leaving home and basic/higher needs satisfaction in the home environment, functionality and relevance of the home environment. All the interrelations are gender-moderated. The polymodality of the relationship between a person and his home is also shown: home is seen as an environment in which basic needs can be met, and if this happens, the main reasons for leaving the home are attractors that promise satisfaction of higher needs. If the basic needs in the home environment are frustrated, the person seeks alternative spaces to meet them. The theoretical position that home is not universal as a resource for meeting all needs is argued: in order to maintain balance, a person needs access to other environments.
