Abstract

The inventory of rare geological objects (geosites) had been compiled within the «National Plan of Actions for Protection and the Sustainable Use of Rare Geological Objects in Azerbaijan Republic for 2009–2012». The analysis of spatial distribution of these geosites and their correspondence to the known objects of the historical, cultural, and recreational interest had revealed the significant potential of the local lands in terms of creation of the National parks of the global importance that meet the requirements of UNESCO and ProGEO.Territory of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic happened to be the most perspective. It is proposed to create Ilandag geopark, which historical, cultural, and natural potential highly implements the specified requirements, in south-eastern part of the Republic. In addition, Julfa geopark with similar natural factors had been created at the border territory of Iranian Azerbaijan region of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In future, it will allow creation the geopark of global level that will promote rapprochement of the local societies and propaganda of the natural diversity of the region.
