Abstract

The article analyzes the publications of the Western press devoted to the situation in Japan in the middle of the XIX century. Special attention is paid to the coverage of the Boshin war (1868–1869) and the initial period of Meiji Restoration, which marked the beginning of Japan's modernization. The role of Western Newspapers in shaping public opinion in Europe and the United States in relation to Japan, familiarity of readers with the previously little-known Eastern country.
