Armenia in the Context of the Initial Stage of the Roman-Persian  Confrontation (227–338 AD)

Since ancient times, the territory of the Armenian Highlands was attracting attention of the neighboring powers due to its extremely advantageous geopolitical position. In the Late Antiquity period the struggle for control over Armenia was gradually waged between two world powers – first Rome and Parthia, and later (and most actively) – between the Roman Empire and Sassanian Iran. Armenia’s position worsened sharply after 227, when the Parthian kingdom, weakened by the wars with Rome, was replaced by the powerful Sasanian Persia. Meanwhile, in the existing historiography attention is mostly directed towards the military-political events of the 4th century, which resulted in the division of the Armenian kingdom between Rome and Iran in 387. In this regard, the purpose of this work is to determine the place and role of Armenia in the context of the struggle between Rome and Iran for hegemony in the Near East during the first century of the existence of the Sasanian power, namely, from the moment of her emergence (227) until the expiration of the First Treaty of Nisibis in 298 (338). Our study shows that during this period Roman-Persian-Armenian relations were a very dynamically changing system. Evolution of the said system can be divided into three stages: 1) 227–252 AD; 2) 252–298 AD; 3) 298–338 AD. The first stage is characterized by a gradual strengthening of Iran's positions in the Middle East in general and in the South Caucasus in particular, which led to the conquest of Armenia by the Persians and her integration into Sasanian Iran (252). In the second stage the Armenian statehood was gradually restoring, which was largely facilitated, on the one hand, by the support from the Roman Empire overcoming the crisis by the end of the 3rd century AD and striving for the revival of the former power, and on the other – internal instability in the kingdom of the Sasanids after the death of Shahanshah Hormizd I (272 –273). The third stage (298–338) can be defined by the rapprochement between Rome and Great Armenia, the strengthening of Roman influence in Armenia and the gradual growth of Roman-Persian contradictions over the control of the Great Armenian kingdom, which resulted in an open confrontation in 337–338 AD.

1	Недавнее обострение карабахского конфликта, в который оказались вовлечены многие международные акторы [Айвазян 2020; Гегелашвили 2020; Маслакова-Клауберг, Садыкова 2020], в очередной раз напомнило о том, что Южный Кавказ в целом и Армения в частности – это место на политической карте мира, в котором пересекаются интересы целого ряда глобальных и региональных игроков.
2	Cледует иметь в виду, что столь важное геополитическое значение Армения и сопредельные территории приобрели не в недавнем прошлом, а еще в глубокой древности. Уже во второй половине II тыс. до н.э. правители Ассирийской державы совершали неоднократные походы на территорию Армянского нагорья, где в ту эпоху начиналось формирование государства Урарту [Пиотровский 1959, 43–45]. Затем, на протяжении более тысячи лет, названия «Урарту» и (с VI в. до н.э.) «Армения» регулярно появляются в источниках при описании бесконечных войн и походов, которыми в указанный период (как, впрочем, и позже) изобиловала история Ближнего Востока.
3	Могущественных соседей эти территории привлекали прежде всего тем, что здесь с древнейших времен располагались богатые города и процветающие сельские поселения. На рубеже XII–XI вв. до н.э. ассирийский царь Тиглатпаласар I составил надпись о своих успешных вторжениях в Урарту, в которой говорится о захваченных в качестве добычи огромных стадах домашнего скота [Дьяконов 1951, 273]. Данные ассирийской эпиграфики подтверждаются более поздними сведениями античных авторов. Так, Геродот (V в. до н.э.) спустя шесть столетий отмечал, что армяне «богаты скотом» [Herod. V.49], а Ксенофонт (V–IV вв. до н.э.) называет Армению «страной обширной и богатой» [Xen. Anab. V.5. 25–34].
4	Роль Армении¹ в международных отношениях значительно усилилась в I в. до н.э., когда вплотную к ее границам приблизились владения двух ведущих держав Средиземноморско-переднеазиатского региона того времени – Рима и Парфии. В ходе продолжавшихся три последующих столетия римско-парфянских войн обе стороны систематически пытались установить свой контроль над Арменией. Армянские правители были вынуждены постоянно лавировать между могущественными соседями, чтобы обезопасить свою страну и свой народ от чужеземной опасности, которая грозила как с запада, так и с востока.	1. В данной статье мы намеренно избегаем применения наименования «Великая Армения» в отношении Древнеармянского государства, поскольку данное обозначение имеет скорее публицистический, нежели научный характер. В настоящее время оно остается предметом ожесточенных дискуссий между националистически настроенными армянскими исследователями и их оппонентами из числа прежде всего представителей Азербайджана. Кроме того, в научно-историческом обороте прочно закрепилось обозначение Древней Армении именно как «Армении», а не «Великой Армении», что нашло отражение, например, в трехтомной «Истории Древнего мира» [Неронова 1989, 275–294], шеститомной «Истории Востока» [Рыбаков 2002, 530–542], шеститомной «Всемирной истории» [Чубарьян 2012, 106–115] и других академических изданиях.
5	Притягательность Армении для обеих империй обусловливалась целым комплексом конкретно-исторических факторов – помимо упомянутых выше общих моментов. Прежде всего, речь идет о чрезвычайно выгодном географическом положении страны, которая в этом смысле служила связующим мостом между Ираном, с одной стороны, и Передней Азией, где находились римские владения, – с другой. С этим была связана значимость и военно-стратегического положения Армении, так как через ее территорию проходили важные и удобные для перемещения больших масс людей коммуникации. Используя их, стороны могли совершать военные вторжения на территорию противника².	2. Аврелий Виктор, сообщая о событиях конца III в., прямо говорит о том, что через Армению лежал «единственный и более легкий путь к победе» над персами [Aur. Vict. De Caes. XXXIX.34].
