The Diaspora Factor in the Context of Pan-Armenian Identity: between Nation and State

Abstract

Research on the Armenian diaspora take a special place in the modern Armenian studies. Approximately 70 per cent of ethnic Armenians live outside the modern Republic of Armenia. Preservation of the Armenian identity within the diaspora is declared as a priority objective. At the same time, the diaspora is perceived as a strategic resource for the development of the Armenian statehood. Meanwhile, there is practically no comprehensive research on this topic. Accordingly, certain myths exist about a unified Armenian diaspora, however, in reality it is more accurate to refer to it as a plethora of Armenian communities in different countries of the world that vary in many ways and are rather fragmented due to their lack of institutionalized unity. This article aims to study the communities of the Armenian diaspora in all their diversity with the objective to reveal the socio-political portrait of these communities. The analysis especially focuses on the institutions within the Armenian diaspora in order to identify their role in the functioning of these communities in general and the preservation of Armenian identity in particular. The main aim is to comprehend the unity between the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian diaspora through examining the place and role of modern Armenian statehood in the models of self-identification of diaspora communities. To this end, the authors study the available literature on the topic, as well as specific empirical material, namely in-depth interviews with experts in the Republic of Armenia and the results of an extensive sociological poll “The Armenian Diaspora Survey” conducted across various communities of the Armenian diaspora. The study concludes that there is a common cultural and linguistic Armenian identity, which does not extend to include civil, political, and – currently – confessional components.

1 В современном мире, где государства продолжают оставаться основными акторами международных отношений, несмотря на рост международной неопределенности и интенсивные изменения в социально-политической жизни обществ, актуализируются страноведческие исследования в широком понимании. С этой позиции особо важным становится изучение трансформирующихся идентичностей под влиянием внутренних и внешних факторов. Арменоведческие исследования имеют уже достаточно долгую историю, но они носят фрагментарный характер, будучи направленными на изучение отдельных феноменов армянской истории и культуры (язык, литература, искусство, церковь и религия и т. д.). Комплексные же исследования, особенно с освещением также социально-политических процессов, по существу, отсутствуют. Сказанное относится и к исследованию феномена армянской диаспоры. Между тем комплексные и системные исследования диаспоры в арменоведческих изысканиях имеют особое значение, так как по самым скромным подсчетам две трети этнических армян проживает вне границ современной Республики Армения.
2 Армянской диаспоре посвящено большое количество исследовательского материала, раскрывающего ту или иную сторону развития армянской диаспоры на современном этапе. В данной статье будет проанализирован определенный сегмент эмпирических данных, который отчасти может показать тенденции развития армянских общин в различных уголках планеты. Основным эмпирическим материалом для этой статьи послужило большое социологическое исследование, проведенное в общинах армянской диаспоры в Египте (Каир), Франции (Марсель), США (Пасадена и Бостон), Канаде (Монреаль), Аргентине, Ливане и Румынии Армянским институтом в Лондоне при поддержке Фонда “Галуст Гюльбенкян” в 2018–2019 гг. [ист. 1]. Нельзя сказать, что социологические опросы в этих общинах могут дать полную картину об армянской диаспоре в целом, но все же необходимо признать, что данный проект, нацеленный на продолжение опросов и в других армянских общинах в разных странах мира, – это первая попытка серьезного социологического исследования армянской диаспоры. Кроме того, при подготовке статьи были проанализированы результаты глубинного интервью, проведенного в рамках исследовательского проекта “Развитие гражданской идентичности на постсоветском пространстве: тенденции, вызовы, риски (на примере России и Армении)” [1], а также богатый материал о положении армянской диаспоры в различных странах мира на армянском, английском и русском языках.
3 Анализ эмпирической базы является необходимым условием для иллюстрации текущего состояния различных армянских общин, поскольку проведенные на данный момент научные исследования так и не привели к формированию целостного представления об армянской диаспоре. Этот аспект связан с переплетением политических, культурных, конфессиональных, лингвистических и иных особенностей отдельных групп населения в различных странах, идентифицирующих себя как армяне. В этой работе мы попытаемся лишь поставить ряд вопросов, которые требуют ответа в современных условиях сохранения и трансформации армянской идентичности, выявив некоторые особенности сложного феномена армянской диаспоры и потенциала укрепления ее связи с армянским государством.
