Abstract

The article explores the role in the Second World War of the then British crown colonies in the Caribbean (Grenada being the prime example), the scale of their involvement in combat both in Europe and in the New World (in particular, in the Anglo-American ‘destroyers for bases’ deal) and the attitude towards such an ally of the British crown as the Soviet Union. The article is based on documents from the United Kingdom, the United States and the Soviet Union, the 1939-1945 press clips from the collection of the National Museum of Grenada and author’s extensive trips to other island nations of the Caribbean.
