Brasilia: utopia, which was realized, however, the dream that didn’t come true?

The article is devoted to the cultural representations of Brazil’s capital – the city of Brasilia, which was built in the middle of the 20th century according the project of Lúcio Costa. Two events that took place in Moscow in July 2018 are in the center of the article – the exhibition “Brasília: from utopia to the capital” in Museum of Moscow, and the film “Brasília – life after design” at the Festival of the Moscow Urban Forum. These two projects form a bright and ambiguous image of Brasilia because each of them focuses on various aspects of Brazil’s capital history and modern life. The exhibition and the film reflect boldness and beauty conceived by the creators of the new capital with its mission – to express the hopes and dreams of many generations of Brazilians of the ideal city. However, today Brasilia is uncomfortable city with suburbs, which are not able to give its residents nothing but uncertainty in the future and a sense of estrangement.
