Corruption in Argentina: Socio-Political Aspects

The article examines the main theoretical approaches to the definition of corruption, identifies the main vectors of the evolution of Argentina anti-corruption legislation. The authors point out that at the beginning of the XXI century in Argentina were adopted a large number of laws which aimed at increasing control over the management of public resources, preventing the interference of private interests in public administration. The authors pay special attention to the specifics of media coverage of corruption, and the mutual influence of media market monopolization and corruption. The authors emphasize that such features of perception of corruption in Argentine media as a close relationship between the media and the judiciary, focusing on the corrupt activities of specific people, rather than on the problem of corruption in general, and concealing certain facts of corruption, could be related to the own political and economic interests of media. According to the international organization Transparency International, Argentina belongs to the group of countries with a high level of corruption, but since 2016 Corruption Perceptions Index shows improvement of Argentina`s score. This shift may be related to the media coverage of corruption. The authors conclude that despite the significant progress in the development of anti-corruption legislation, corruption continues to be one of the leading obstacles to the effectiveness of public administration.
