Coded Telegrams of the GPU on the Progress of the Confiscation of Church Valuables in the Kuban and Stavropol Regions in 1922

The corpus of coded telegrams of the GPU, identified in the Central Archive of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, on the progress of the campaign to confiscate church valuables in the Kuban and Stavropol regions in 1922 is considered. It is concluded that this type of historical sources fragmentarily reflects the events that took place in state-confessional relations in the South-East of Russia and only in those aspects that Moscow wanted to know about. It has been established that the coded telegrams contain very valuable factual material about the work of the commissions for the confiscation of church valuables, the progress of the confiscation itself, the agitation of the clergy and believers, the number of confiscated values, their concealment by the clergy and believers, the excesses and incidents that took place, the mood of the population and its attitude towards the confiscation, arrests among the clergy and laity.
