Revolutionary Struggle Against Salazar: Santa Maria Hijacking in 1961

The hijacking of the ship Santa Maria in 1961 by the members of the Iberian Revolutionary Liberation Directorate (Diretório Revolucionário Ibérico de Libertação — DRIL) was a part of armed struggle against the regime of António Salazar. In contrast to other protests against the New State, mostly various attempts of a military or civil coup, it was distinguished by its terrorist nature. Although its participants hoped that their action would cause an uprising in some part of the Portuguese empire, their main goal was to draw international attention to the dictatorial nature of Salazar’s power. They ultimately managed to achieve this goal. Based on the memoirs of participants, as well as the materials from the National Archives of Torre de Tombo, the article examines how this event, similar to piracy, was in fact recognized as a political protest.
