The German Cursive Script of the Renaissance Period In the Development of the Neo-Gothic Documentary Handwriting

The paper deals with the German cursive script of the 16th century known as Kurrent or neo-Gothic cursive script, which developed from late medieval cursive writing. Based on the authentic charters and letters from the Archive of St. Petersburg of History, Russian Academy of Sciences, the author examines the evolution of neo-Gothic characteristics in their scripts and demonstrates the ductus of the cursive neo-Gothic letters. The author treats for instance “a”, “r”, “v” formed of two elements connected by fine serifs, the “h” with continuous loop on the descenders, the characteristic form of “e”, seen as a tight “n”. The fluid neo-Gothic Kurrent was a broadly traced cursive script. For that reason some paleographers speak about the neo-Gothic Kurrent as a script of “the Renaissance period”. But the German neo-Gothic handwriting is characterized by remarkable bond angle too, if considered that the Kurrent was the basis for later scripts for German texts in the seventeenth through twentieth centuries.
