The Institute for Marxist Research in Chile: Expectations and Limitations of a Communist Intellectual Project

We propose to give an account of the creation and operation of the Marxist Research Institute promoted by the Communist Party of Chile in 1967. From interviews with protagonists of said organization and the consultation of various secondary printed sources, we expose the main areas of its activity, its main aspects of political-ideological attention and, finally, the importance it had in the Chilean context in the years before and after the triumph of the Popular Unity, in 1970. In general, we are interested in taking steps in order to propose a historical interpretation of the intellectual dimension — in its ideas, debates and characters — that expressed the struggle and trajectory of the Chilean left during the 20th century, a matter still in the making in our context historiographic. In this sense, IDIM was a significant experience that deserves current attention, and this not only because of the specific antecedents of this initiative, but, especially, because of the contrast that we can make today with respect to the eidetic and intellectual demands that today they are imposed on this sector of Chilean politics.

Nos proponemos dar cuenta de la creación y actuación del Instituto de Investigaciones Marxistas (IDIM) impulsado por el Partido Comunista de Chile, en 1967. Con base en entrevistas a protagonistas de tal organización y la consulta de diversas fuentes secundarias impresas, exponemos los ámbitos principales de su actividad, sus principales aspectos de atención político-ideológica y, finalmente, la significación que el mismo tuvo en el contexto chileno de los años previos y propios de la Unidad Popular. En general, nos interesa ir dando pasos en vistas a proponer una interpretación histórica de la dimensión intelectual -en sus ideas, debates y personajes- que expresó la lucha y trayectoria de la izquierda chilena durante el siglo XX, asunto aún en ciernes en nuestro contexto historiográfico. En este sentido, IDIM fue una experiencia significativa que merece la atención actual, y ello no sólo por atender a los antecedentes propios de esta iniciativa, sino, en especial, por el contraste que hoy podemos realizar respecto de las demandas eidéticas e intelectuales que hoy se imponen a este sector de la política chilena.
