Abstract

The article considers the viewpoints of the famous Church figure archi-mandrite Makariy Glukharev (1792—1847) on the role of women in social and missionary activities in the second quarter of the 19th century. Archimandrite Makariy theoretically justified the need for a broad humanitarian and natural science education for women who are ready to work for charity in mission centers throughout Russia: to treat the sick, teach children, help organize the household, and catechize nonbelievers. However, in the Altai mission of archimandrite Makariy, where several women worked, the project was not implemented. Despite the fact that he called the new workers “deaconesses”, his proposals can not be called an attempt to restore the ancient ministry of women. Father Makariy’s ideas were ahead of their time and were mostly connected with the development of new Russian and European processes that paved the way for women to enter the “public arena” as active participants. Similar initiatives of the same time in Germany (protestant deaconesses in Kaiserswerth) proved to be more productive in practice. In this context, the work of archimandrite Makariy Glukharev can be considered as the background of these new phenomena and the first attempt to institutionalize women’s charity ministry in Russia.
